Russian State TV Duped by Fake AI Story About ‘Soviet Code’ in DeepSeek

Despite being entirely false, the claim went viral. Influential social media accounts amplified the story, and even veteran Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov shared it on Telegram, calling the Soviet Union “the most educated and advanced country” before later deleting his post.

While the mistake was embarrassing for state media, it also exposed a deep longing for past Soviet achievements. However, in reality, Russia lags behind in AI development, ranking 31st in the Global AI Index—far behind China, the U.S., and even fellow BRICS nations like India and Brazil. Meanwhile, China’s latest DeepSeek models continue to shake up the AI landscape, leaving Russia watching from the sidelines.

From the world's largest repository of printed works some of which are currently still protected by copyright laws. Copyright is upheld for 70 years after authors death unless released to public domain by author.

Copyright reform is necessary for national security - Anna’s Blog
" Then came AI. Virtually all major companies building LLMs contacted us to train on our data. Most (but not all!) US-based companies reconsidered once they realized the illegal nature of our work. By contrast, Chinese firms have enthusiastically embraced our collection, apparently untroubled by its legality. This is notable given China’s role as a signatory to nearly all major international copyright treaties."
