The new work by Feng and his team suggests that the Hungarians found not a "dark photon" but rather a "protophobic X boson" -- a strange particle whose existence could indicate a fifth force of nature. The known electromagnetic force acts on protons and electrons, but this newfound particle apparently interacts only with protons and neutrons, and then only at very short distances, researchers said.

When scientists say they may/might you can just about always also say with the same confidence may not.
Very true ... what I find exiting is the fact that we do not yet know everything there is to know about physics. The late 19th and early 20th century presented a revolution in physics not seen since Newton, and then Archimedes before that ... I wonder how long it's going to take before another major fundamental discovery is made.

Everything that seems to be out-of-line with standard physics today is either very small effects at very small scales or very large effects at intergalactic scales. So even if there's a ground shaking discovery of a 5th force it's unlikely to change much ordinary technology for a long time.

I would argue that the effects would be unpredictable. But statistically speaking, I'd also say you're right. Less than a handful of scientific and technological discoveries have had a profound and immediate historical impact. Technology is more prone to be developed in small, steady steps.
