Can someone tell me if I enable the load on a synchronous counter and preset the inputs to a certain number, is the counter supposed to just jump to the preloaded number and stay there on the next clock cycle, or is it supposed to count up to that number with several clock cycles and then stop? I am using Multisim and a 74LS190D and it is jumping to the number and stopping, but I want to make sure that this is correct. Thanks ahead of time for answering this.

 

The value to be preset should be present and stable when the load signal is asserted. The value loaded is immediately sent to the output.

The truth table indicates the counter is disable while LOAD is asserted. Data sheets are very handy.
