Also how would one good about combining the voltage from a few ATX power supplies and making it adjustable? Would you use a coverter with all the wires feeding into it?

 

Sometimes, it doesn't make sense to build, when buying gives you a guaranteed functioning circuit, boxed up and ready to use.

Look in other places as well, I just stumbled upon their site and I'm sure something cheaper can be found.

Also, please be aware that you'll probably not be needing it to go to 30V! Don't chase numbers without knowing what you need (what you want is secondary to getting something that will serve you well for many years).

For most beginners even 1.5V to 12V will do nicely, but depending on your interests you may need 18V or 24V - you don't need to make a lifetime buy - I don't know any experienced folks, that haven't bought and built several PSUs.

A current limiter is too important to skip - it will save your behind in countless situations (if you set it correctly of course).

When you did that, have you ever added some other parts and less or more?

 

added a variable resistor to the feedback loop, and put 4mm terminals on the case, and changed the output caps to 35v or higher,depends which chip they use, as to how easy it is..some are easier than others..

yes its a matter of modifying the error feedback loop, different chips have there own methods which can be overridden.

I can't just hook a current limiter and a boost-buck converter to a ATX PSU right?

 

you can, but the atx output is only 12v, if your going to make a psu for a bench i would start by modifying a laptop psu first, or make a linear one from a transformer .

yes if you draw a high current, what do you have in mind , modifying an Atx, or making a linear one?

Every EE player should be have some liner power supply and maybe some switching power for high current, if someone has enough money then he can buy a switching power and the specs close to the linear power, money, money, money.

You may buy a linear power supply or build one as Regulator 0-30V 5A by IC 723 & 2N3055, I bought a kit similar as that long time ago and it still working.

 

Sometimes to buy a old second hand for linear power supply will let you to using it for a long long time.
