Visible light cannot penetrate solid objects?

While we know that glass is a liquid, for all intents and purposes we can treat it as solid. What about plastics and acrylics?

Light also penetrates various crystals which are certainly solids.

Of course sir, i totally agree with you. and in the analytical way he explained it i have little doubts now that the flash will be able to blind people through solid objects. as well as all the other terrific changes it will bring to earth.

 

Thing is, the effects would be temporary. The solar wind is pretty conductive, so is the upper atmosphere. By the time the survivors try to rebuild civilization we could have electricity again. That would be after the other prioritys, such as food and shelter, not to mention burying our dead. You are describing an apocalypse. Electricity would be the smallest of the survivors problems.

 

There is no reason to worry about visible light because if ionizing radiation passes trough your body you will be dead.Generally if something like that ever happened planet would be dead and would turn in Mars 2.All organic life forms would die.But something like this will probably never happen because we have atmosphere .

And now i will say something which might appear conspiracist or childishly naive but i think there are already quite some people that know that fact. we saw in hollywood movies like the book of eli, where eli was blinded by such a flare and humanity has gone to pre - medieval times in terms of civilization. and there was a post apocalyptic landscape and all these began with the flare. and also another movie - which i dont remember the title it was the flash or sth that talks about the flare too. i believe the higher elites know about this upcoming disaster, and have no inhibition or hesitation to shove that fact in our faces. a few years back there was a big flare, not enough to threaten earth but enough to inspire some concern to a part of the scientific community. and they said too that it would be possible a similar much stronger flare to hit on earth one day. imagine the horrible disaster. instantly the 3000 aeroplanes that are every moment flying in the globe will fall into oceans and crash on the land. factories, transportation, telecomunication will all be rendered useless. cells, computers, and everything with an intergrated chip in it (almost everything) will be burned to a crisp. in such a catastrophy i wouldnt put my bet too much on our mere atmosphere.

Hollywood movies do not have to obey the laws of physics. They adhere to the laws of an imaginative author. Said author often bases his plots on the premise of "what would happen if such and such a law did NOT exist?"

You wont have apocalypse in case electricity goes off since it can be easily repaired under 5 years.Only power grid system will fail but not home appliances.Now in case we get hit by radiation then nobody would be alive to be able to worry about anything.

 

They make hardened chips. You wont find tjem at radio shack or other distributors.

Yes but you would have an apocalypse because our whole civilization is based on electricity. imagine the accidents that will occur from the very first instance of the event. all the lifes that depend on machines in hospitals, production and many other things will cease to exist. so we actually speak about an apocalypse and not a rather light one. especially if the half+ population gets blinded by the flash.

Nope. Just the musings of an elderly person who won't live to see that day. The road rage you see today will be nothing compared to what would happen during an apocalyptic scenario. Whatever gains humanity made will be flushed away before society can recover.

Nope. Just pragmatic. Old people have a longer view of history and can see trends that will wipe out 10% or 50% of the population if left unchecked, like ebola. I'm afraid that one is coming to get us and the population density of this planet will aid it tremendously. Recognizing that there is a real chance of 20% to 50% of the population being dead in one year is not elitist. It's merely pragmatic.

 

Sooooooooooooo..... what about the people that are on the other side of the planet when this super flare happens?

BTW life of one form or another has been constantly on this planet for about 4 billion years now of which the first three billion or so the sun was a pretty angry neighbor yet life survived just the same.

 

The apocalyptic scenario posed was one that destroyed all electricity on the planet. It would have to be one hell of a solar flare to engulf the earth, and the radiation alone will solve the overpopulation problem, perceived or real, in a short time, shall we say atto-seconds to microseconds. Cockroaches might survive to be the dominant species.

I love the television commercial that alludes to the fantasy that if cars were invented today, they would be electric. Cars, like all forms of transportation that superseded walking, evolved. Even electricity evolved. Edison's reliance on man's credulity could not stop AC.

Unfortunately, addressing some actions cross the line to the politics de' jour, and that is a subject we try not to broach here. Man as a species thinks they have evolved ... yet, we see empirical events that indicate otherwise.

 

if something like this happened, people will wipe themselves out. It is only to be expected. Remember what happens when a disaster strikes an area - hurricane, tsunami, earthquake? what is the first thing people do - do they stand together and work to overcome the challenge or do they... I refuse to finish as this topic has always made me depressed. I am not yet old and therefore refuse to be pragmatic about it. Sorry folks...

Also from what I have read, power grids everywhere need heavy upgrades to even keep functioning at normal loads, forget any stress on the system. Outdated infrastructure. I don't know when the so-called smart grids will be coming online

 

The only thing that comes to mind is photons. I don't place too much credit to it though.

Electricity is fast, it is reliable, it is easy to create on demand, and at the moment nothing else comes close (except photons).

And besides electromagnetism is a FUNDAMENTAL force. Your only practical options are the strong nuclear force.
