@wayneh you are right jumping those positions won't accomplish anything, but I am still a novice - so thanks for pointing that out.
@LesJones I was going to remove the springs that hold the batteries in their compartments if the fix worked and I couldn't buy a replacement part to do the repair correctly.

@Dodgydave Can you describe what I can do to bypass the switch and only use AC?

I tried your suggestion and was receiving 12v DC output from both the lead to the battery and the wires that lead into the rest of the unit for the first time, but, when I attached the board the unit would not power on. Strangely, after a few minutes, I was not receiving any output voltage from the wire that leads to the unit but only on the battery lead.

I redid the connection (photo) to positions 2 and 3 and now the unit is working!

I plan to keep the battery section disconnected, do you think this is safe enough to operate for personal home use?
If you have the patience, can you explain what we did and how you knew to look there?

Really appreciate the education.
