Can't find any data on this models input connector "EXT".... I know what a external trigger is suppose to do... But on this oscilloscope I seem to get a screen trace when I have set triggering to EXT with no or shorted "EXT" input... What type of signal should be applied, Square, Ramp, Circle what???? What should the "EXT" input amplitude be, 100mv , 1V, 10Kv ...?????

Any input into this would be appreciated .... Thanks

Triggering on an EXT source is no different from triggering on an internal signal. All the triggering settings will apply as for internal triggering. You will get a trace on the oscilloscope if the Trigger is set to Auto. If you want to see a trace only when a trigger source is available, set Trigger to Normal.

Works just fine for me. Both scope probes to the DHO814 Cal signal.

AUTO trigger on the SDS with trigger source connected and DHO generating a Ext trigger signal.

Remove the signal on the DHO814 so no trigger is sent to the SDS.

With SDS in AUTO trigger with free-running sweep. In NORMAL trigger the SDS would just continue to display the last triggered sweep.

Specifications are in the datasheet on P7 Input and P8 in Trigger System:

Thank you everyone... once you explained "trace with Auto" and "no trace with normal", I was able to find that my Coax cabling to the EXE input was picking up signals and triggering (even though it was shorted an the end)... The input on this model is vary sensitive....
