There are many transformer properties and arrangements. Some are big some small all different applications.
The educational lesson discusses different properties of transformers. The peaking transformer is interesting.
This peaking transformer has much sharper BH curve because of it's core material and design useful in wave shaping.

I like the clean pulse shape using 2N2369 when operated in avalanche mode it fires when the voltage hits about 60V
there is a similarity to peak transformer in wave shape due to the transistors negative resistance properties. If that is the effect that you want.
Transformers are passive not prone to failure. The application can be laser driver. Most pulse circuits don't need to be lightning fast.
Application note In figure 27 you can see a clean 100 pico second pulse.
