how can I re-solder the small power connector that has come adrift from the pcb on my motorola focus85 video camera, using a normal size 5mm diameter bit electronics soldering iron?

Post a picture of the connector if you want detailed answers, but without seeing the connector:
1. Clean the solder pads and make sure that they are tinned evenly.
2. Place the connector on the pads.
3. Add some flux.
4. Heat the pins with the soldering iron (use a 5mm chisel-shaped bit, not a conical one)

Soldering a micro-connector with such a large iron will certainly be a very difficult task. You may be able to create a much finer tip from some #12 copper wire if you can file it to a fine spade tip and wrap it around the 5mm tip barrel portion. It does not take a whole lot of heat to solder the very small stuff, but it does require the hot enough temperature.

I really DO NOT RECOMMEND any hot air method, because the applied heat is much hotter AND it transfers to everything. I once melted two small relays un-soldering them from a PCB, using the hot air on the solder side of the PCB.
