Well while late to the party I will share this. Soldering is a skill set and like any skill set practice makes perfect. I generally suggest people find some old scrap printed circuit boards and practice placing parts on the board and removing parts off the board. Your second attempt looked to be a big improvement over the first attempt. The more you solder the better you get at it. You may also want to Google "acid brushes" and get some, they are very inexpensive. Once you have some cut the brush at an angle close to the metal. This makes for a nice stiff brush. After soldering wet the board and scrub your solder joints with common Isopropanol alcohol and rinse with same. The alcohol should dry quickly removing any excess flux and crap.
