Where did you get those images? I'd check the datasheet and see what it recommends.

The grid pattern of gaps between pads looks to me like the avoiding-air-bubbles thing you mentioned, but the apparent missing pad doesn't look familiar to me.

As mentioned above, check against the datasheet. I've received less than perfect footprints from ultra librarian.

 

This is why you should ALWAYS create your own parts. NEVER trust someone else's junk.
