Smurf Attack getting serious

@Brownout That was really helpful! I have a terrible case of beginnerism with Ubuntu.

It looks like I have to open a Terminal and write a command line every time I want to download a file. One suggestion was, Ctrl-drag so I tried that. The result is a message that says I don't have permission to read the file so Ubuntu refuses to copy it to the desktop. Well, who do I have to get permission from to read a file? I'm used to being the owner of my own life and the giver of permissions for anything I want to read. Apparently, Linux has assumed control of that function.:(

Of course it does.
But you're not telling me how.
mumble...mumble...Dark Side.:D

I guess it's the price one has to pay for something that's supposedly free
I cheated.:p I have never bought a computer or paid for Windows. I just resurrect computers after The Geek Squad at Best Buy pronounces them dead. That way I get a computer for the price of a hard drive or for just removing the graphics card and plugging the monitor into the mother board video connector.:) I learned Windows first because all the free computers I received ran Windows. This is not a mystery.;)

If anyone is interested, just remove the .txt from the filename and open it in a browser.
Your link responds pretty much the same with or without the .txt removed.
It opens a browser page with stuff like:

I'm going to start asking simple questions in the right Forum...Computing and Networks.

As for Bertus, I opened you link in Firefox. Then I copied that (bunch of text with long strings of A's) and pasted it in my reply.
I assume I'm supposed to find the Links in there and click on them to find the information you wanted to present.

When I do the drag&drop to the desktop, I always get a link to the file at the website. That link always opens in a Firefox browser page. Therefore, I can never copy a jpeg or a .txt to my desktop and open them later in a picture viewer or gedit.

Right click on the link you want to download. Click save link or save link as. Save link saves downloaded file to Downloads folder. Save as saves to folder of your choice.

Where are you copying from? I was able to move a file from a file system folder to the desktop just fine.

Yay! Got menus!:)
As an alternate to menus, open the file system. Navigate to /usr/share/applications. If you know the name of the app, you can search on the name by typing the name. Otherwise find the app, right click. Select Copy to Desktop

AAC
This Thread. A file joeyd posted on page 2, I think.
Page loading just got very slow after the "menu available" modification.
Still starting up with no mouse until I start the computer twice.

Yay! Save as: worked. Open with gedit. Home free!
Now to tell Ubuntu it's a printer driver.:)

The problem was that Save as: is offered to me as, "Save Link as:" so I thought it was only offering to save a Link again.

Not quite as convenient as drag&drop, but it feeds the Bulldog.

What do you see in your browser?
It didn't look like that yesterday, but now it does. :) Lots of Links to instructions in English.

I feel like a noob reading, "Ohm's Law for noobies".:D
Lots of new words. Needs repetition.

I'm usually smart enough that you only have to tell me once, but nobody told me most of this. Right now, it's a great dog-pile of information!

Now, go to the "administration" tab, click add printer, and type your username and password at the prompt.

Post an acknowledgement when you get that far, and, if possible, a screen shot.
