I have met a question and do not understand. please help explain. thanks.

Q. What happens when a single-phase motor with internal overload protection has a shorted run winding?
A. The motor cycles on the overload relay.

I am assuming that is a thermal embedded winding sensor?
If it operates due to overheat, then it trips/opens a O/L relay.
Without more detail, this is an answer to general operation.
Max.

hello sir, thanks for your reply. actually, this is a Canadian Red Seal assessment question. I assume this question should apply to general operation. I actually do not understand what it means by "The motor cycles on the overload relay". Could you help further explain on that "The motor cycles on the overload relay" will look like? Thank you sir.

The way I interpret that is the O/L relay is (de)activated on the occurrence of the thermal switch opening.
IOW the motor circuit is open circuited.
Without details of the actual equipment, this is a general interpretation.
Max.
