Hi,

I'm a computer engineer, electronics hobbyist and maker. I'm interested in learning electronics fundamentals and design from root. Already put some efforts (hands on and certifications) from good institutes. But still, I have to learn a lot. I know. For good electronics design, knowledge of power supply is essential (as far as I know). I love fundamentals and I dare to reinvent the wheel, if it is necessary in the path of learning fundamentals.

Cutting long story short, for my designed electronics products which all require a good power supply, I'm in search of some Simplest - with least components - helping in learning SMPS fundamentals - may be a moderately efficient - SMPS circuit / product (open for reverse engineering, can be purchased in India) with following specifications:
Input: 100 - 240 Vac 50/60 Hz
Output: 5.0 V, 1000 mA

Your help in this concern, if possible is highly appreciated.

you should take a look the LNK series, the redneck approach is to use only a simple 1000uH RF inductor, not a transformer.
Works with most these IC tough not documentated.

Plus you wont have galvanic isolation. You should use the 1W kind. They should be cheap and available in your country.

If you dont use IC its a bit though to get it right, basically you need a matching ferrite transformer if it is not matching, at the high input tension it will put hudge strain and easily your components will go up into smoke.

So these IC are a relief even for the amateur to get such circuit working.

Power Integrations is an IC company that specializes in small SMPS control parts. PI has arrangements with some inductor and transformer companies, so for some of their parts you do not need to grow a switching power transformer from scratch.

The simplest flyback boost converter is the blocking oscillator type Joule thief. A version of this design was very common in consumer electronics off line SMPSUs. The simplest step down buck converter is the hysteretic.

Aren't transformerless AC line powered things banned here?

Doing an off-line SMPS is a large undertaking and not a project for a novice.

Yes indeed. This is a good way to kill yourself, or others.
By your questions, you don't appear to have the expertise and skills needed to build an off-line SMPS.
Please don't. They are very dangerous and there are enough flaky versions coming out of places like China as it is. A good power supply is a fundamental base for any project, and trying to make a "cheap" one is a bad mistake.
