The simplest radio is called a crystal set which requires no battery or external power source.
There is an entire hobby devoted to building crystal radios.

 

the crystal set socioty has lots of circuits, explanations of circuits and kits on their web site. I dont have it in my favorites on this computer right now. also a guy hamed Dave Schmarder has a good site.
