Anyone have any ideas on what to use to guide an RC car using a signal wire that would lay on the ground? I was thinking about an invisible dog fence possibly.

Keeping away from a wire is relatively easy. Detect a signal from the wire and steer the other way. Following a wire is more tricky as you need to detect which side of the wire you are.

Maybe a way to get around that problem is to have two pickups, one on each side of the car so that the signal amplitudes can be compared and the steering servo would try to keep the signal levels of the two sensor equal.
