I was reading an instruction manual on how to set up a wind turbine generator and in the circuit diagram they had a few batteries hooked up in parallel. Could someone please explain to me why they would do this? Would this not short the batteries?

No, paralleling well-matched batteries is equivalent to just buying a bigger battery. Question? what is the difference between a 50Ah battery and a 100Ah battery? Answer, more plate area. Does it matter if the plate area comes in the same bucket or two different buckets? The caveat is "well-matched", both have to start out new good, and be fully-charged when first connected in parallel.

What would short two batteries is to connect +- on the first to -+ on the second. Hold on to your shorts.
