Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a way to detect the incipient short circuit faults in induction motor windings. I'm measuring Phase currents , the three voltages and the speed. But from these only measurements, it's really difficult to detect the short circuit fault in its very beginning.

... One possible sign to monitor is the phase current magnitude. A motor that is performing correctly will have phase currents that are equal, more or less.

I thought about this. Yet, you know, when the fault is really small you can't differentiate between its effect and the effect of three phase voltage unbalance.

What do you feel you gain from early detection?

Once a motor develops a shorted winding regardless of whether its winding to winding 'in coil' short ot to the core it is damaged and will need replacement or rebuilding.
