In some organizations they actually do this to test the resourcefulness and ingenuity of new hires. IMHO this is a reprehensible form of abuse. When it happened to me, I put my nose to the grindstone, came up with a range of alternatives all of which were subsequently ignored. If I had known then, what I know now, my response would have been considerably less polite. My wage at the time was $2.50/hour and twice the federal minimum wage. They could well afford to pay me for wasting my time.

I agree, waste of time, give the kid a real opportunity that has a good chance of success.

 

This reminds me of the late Edward DeBono (who first coined the term "lateral thinking"). He showed (very convincingly) how people make assumptions sub-consciously and how those assumptions impede getting a solution sometimes.

Actually I'm most junior in the company, calling supplier is not my job, senior told me to study about it.

Then you study about it... start with specs. what thickness of material is needed to be covered. what is the speed of sound in that material. what is the material on the other side of the pipe wall... if similar to PVC, measurement will be impossible or at least unreliable. once you know the thinnest pipe wall and time it takes for sound to travel through it, you can some up with specs for something to research or design/build. then build it or do a report and throw it at your bosses desk.

 

I would take a different approach than most people here.

Ultrasonic thickness testing isn't new or uncommon. There's no need to reinvent the wheel. I'd suggest starting by researching the theory of operation and how commercial gauges work. This link looks like a pretty good start. Study it and other references to understand operation and what's required to make it work. Type of transducer, the response of PVC, the accuracy of the clock to achieve the measurement accuracy you need, and so on. Then drill down on each of those things. What kind of transducer you need, and what's available. The time scale you need for your measurements. What variables affect accuracy. Figure out the building blocks and figure out how they work together.

I suspect your boss wants to know about how to solve the problem, so work towards that.
