I heard a radio last night about research into self constructing nanobots.

I seem to remember a movie or a television show about this. Nanobots escape a lab. They start consuming / deconstructing all matter to obtain the atoms to build more bots. The earth is almost destroyed.

Was this a movie or a TV show? Or just my vivid imagination? If my imagination seems like a pretty cool concept for a movie and I am surprised it has not been doen.

 

Its a common theme from the Stargate SG1 Sci-Fi adventure series relating to -The Replicators- a out of control self replicating robot bug/toy gone wrong creation that evolved as the series went on.

Although this theme of an ever replicating mechanical device originated from elsewhere it's where I most associate it with in Sci-Fi genre tropes now.
