If an SCR is used to start a DC motor won't it stop if there is a break in the motors contacts?

 

Yes.

One way to check to see if you can control a DC motor with an SCR is to do a continuity check on the motor leads using a battery and a flashlight bulb. If the light goes on and off when the motor is turned, you can probably use an SCR.
