The thyristor will turn on when the ldr resistance increases as the daylight reduces, depending on the Vgk of the thyristor, usually 1.5v. Note the output voltage will be half wave 120v pulsed dc, i would use a Bridge Rectifier instead of a single diode.

I may be wrong but I believe that non isolated mains circuits contravenes AAC site T&C's.????

It is only a excerise to see if that circuit works , if I was to put it to use I would of course enclose / encase / isolate it from human touch to IP 5/6 , but off course I can just delete the thread ! .
