In a practical circuit D2 and D3 could be TVS or Zener diodes, to suppress transients by clamping voltages.

I thought that too, although the capacitive coupling to ground seems odd to me. I would've expected D2 and D3 to have direct ground connections, perhaps also with a capacitor in parallel, but not in series.

Of course, I have an awful lot to learn about power conditioning and circuit protection. If there's a logic to this arrangement, I'd be interested in learning how and why it's beneficial.

It's like a 3-phase bridge rectifier on a single phase mains supply with the free terminal connected to earth through a capacitor!

For concerns over safety we are not allowed to discuss electronics with direct connection to AC mains without proper isolation.
For this reason this thread is now closed to further posts.
