Good thing the Ruskies didn't mistake those meteorites for incoming ICBMs, and respond in kind.

If 500 people sustained injuries from this relatively small meteorite, one shudders to think about the toll that could result if a larger chunk of space rock landed anywhere on Earth, even if that impact was at sea.

It is time to get that space laser system up and running, before the big one hits.

If you search the city name on Youtube there are a lot of videos including some CCTV inside buildings showing the windows being blown in.

 

Happens a lt in russia, research the meteor that blewup in the atmosphere and leveled 10,000 square miles of trees in siberia in the 10's or 20's. Its well documented a astroid or meteor came into the atmosphere and would have gone back out but the friction of the air made it explode.

Here is where the missile was stated (Russian Times) Internet Pravda or something.

They've changed the article now to say:

The regional Emergency Ministry denied previous unconfirmed reports by local media that the meteorite was shot by the military air defenses.
The local newspaper Znak reported the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk.



Quoting a source in the military, it wrote a missile salvo blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.


Regnum news agency quoted a military source who claimed that the vapor condensation trail of the meteorite speaks to the fact that the meteorite was intercepted by air defenses.

I find it pretty amazing how high it is. The sonic boom comes 30 seconds into the video, which makes it at least 10km high, and it must have taken him a while to get his camera out on top of that.

I never said I believed their story. Russia has been lacking for news releases of late. This is probably the only thing they could maybe hope to reach for since the US shot down a satellite with an SM-9 a while back. Do you think the majority of Russians in the area believe that it wasn't shot down?

I'm sure its been 48 hours. If you can get the 1st auctions you can make some good money. Its worth like the same as gold, may be not this one because there will be so much of it. But that one that his Mass or somewhere near there and did the same thing here in the US. People from the town and even out of staters decended on the debris trail finding meteorites. Then there were brokers and universities buying the samples in the town square for like months. Anytime you can identify a certain meteor it makes it more valuable, and when its only small peices it makes it more valuable. I thikn the russian meteor will end up flooding the market and you will be able to get em cheap, then over 20-30 years they will become rare. Problem is now people know their worth real money now.

 

Hmm, before I go out and lavish my entire life savings on a few chunks of "meteorite", I wonder how I can ascertain that the rocks I acquire for my collection are indeed from Pluto, as opposed to being mere gravel gathered from a Russian roadside by an opportunistic entrepreneur.
