RPi GPIO pins connect directly to transistor gate?

Hello AAC forum,

I have a question about the design that I have attached. Is this design correct(ignoring the values of the battery, transistor ect)? or can I attach my RPi GPIO pin to the gate (without the resistor to ground and attaching my RPi's ground pin to common ground)?

the square wave will be my pi (either the GPIO pin or ground pin accordingly). I just dont want to short my pi or damage it in any way.
