what is a rotary transformers? what are the applications?

can a rotary transformer be used instead of slip rings in alternators?

If not why?

They are not built for power applications. The only use I am aware of is in taking the signal from the rotating head in a VCR.

I wonder if vishwakrishnan was thinking of a device similar to the 'Dynamotor' used during WW11 as a power supply for the BC348 receiver. It was an electric motor coupled to a generator to supply HT to the receiver.

Could be... My old supervisor had one under the seat in his car back in the 60's to make power for his tube linear amp. The lights got dim as it powered up.

Sometimes an induction motor is called a rotary transformer, because the stator winding can be considered the primary and the rotor bars in the rotor are comnsidered to be the secondary winding(s)
