A vertical laser beam wouldn't help. Nearly all the light would be wasted. Only a tiny fraction, scattered by the atmosphere, would reach the robot.

I have found a product that is very similar to what I am trying too achieve. Its called the Turf Tank. Does anyone know how this device operates?

Most companies don't like to give out their secrets. Well, you probably could use a laser guided robot, if you did it right. Maybe have some photodiodes and a filter so it can detect the laser and move in a strait line. But you would want the laser to be horizontal, pointed at the robot.
