Feel a bit daft posting this but I'm trying to identify a resistors value.
Which way round should I be reading that? Looks to me like a silver band one end and gold the other?!

My meter says it's 150ohms, I think it should be 1k8 or 280ohms, either way it's getting warm/hot on a non functional tractor dash!

Ps, just checked my meter against some know resistors and it tally's up.

 

What makes you think that it is a resistor?

 

Good call, just spotted L2 underneath it and all the gunk on the board, so it's likely an inductor?
Should it be getting warm is the next question?

Warm, yes. Hot, no. If it is running hot, then something might be blown, causing high current through it. You need to check what it is connected to.

 

By the size of it, the designer was anticipating that the inductor would be passing a sizeable current.

 

Does the inductor look like it was original design or was it a patch after the PCB design?

 

It looks original, think I'm the first to strip it, just pulled the end and there's 50mA or so going through it.

Gets hot enough you don't want to keep your finger on it but I'm not sure it's the problem.

If you know the DC resistance or the voltage across it you can calculate the wattage being dissipated.

 

I've left it now, but it was flowing 0.05A is 150 ohms
So v=ir
V is 7.5
P=vi
0.375w ?
Is that enough to heat a package that size?
