I am fixing a circuit test PSF60-12 power converter and I need help to identify an IC.

Info on the power converter (PSF60-12 ) can be found here:
https://www.circuittest.com/psf60-12-ac-dc-power-supply-60w-12vdc-5a.html

Background...
I was trying to power a 24 VDC actuator and I didn't have a 24 VDC source so I thought I could use a this AC to 12 VDC converter (supply) plus another 12 volt battery in series to get 24 VDC... well bad idea... the power supply emitted flames before a small explosion erupted although I don't fully understand why.

Here are some photos of the bad unit.

I purchased a second and took some pictures in hopes of repairing it.
Here are the photos of the good unit:

So I think I need to replace the IC and the zener diode, but anything else I should replace or check before applying ac power?

I can't identify the IC. I know the part number, but I don't know the manufacturer.
I searched
http://how-to.wikia.com/wiki/Howto_...(chip)_manufacturers_by_their_logos/all_logos
Can you identify the IC?

Thank you !

Thank you Dodgydave and JohnInTx! You are right. It is a ST Microelectronics UC3842B 8 pin DIP.

And I think the component that was destroyed was a regular diode, not a zener.

What would be the best way to choose a suitable replacement for the diode without removing the one from the good unit?

Ideally it could be an ultrafast diode, best way is to look at the trackside and see where it's connected, and compare it with the schematic on the datasheet.
