Question: is it possible to short circuit a motherboard with a pcie extender?

Be grateful if anyone can help me with the following issue.

I've managed to short circuit my motherboard. The situation is as follows, I connected a pcie x16 extender to a pci x1 motherboard connector. The pcie x16 extender requires a molex connector for power. However the female molex was of bad quality making it possible to connect the male molex the wrong way round (sometimes stuff which you would not expect happens). As a consequence the 12v and 5v connectors were cross wired. Can anyone confirm that this could lead to short circuiting the motherboard and if so, how to find the defective item.

I wouldn't say 'short-circuit' necessarily, but it could certainly kill some components, especially polarised capacitors and semiconductor devices.
Start by looking for blown fuses, any obvious scorched areas or distorted caps or other components. Could be a long haul :(.
