Hi. When purchasing a new oscilloscope does one keep away from Chinese brands (like Owon, Hantek etc) - or what? Thing is, it seems to me the reliability of Chinese made stuff might that good. But, I have no actual user experience. That is why I'm looking at Tektronix TBS1000C. But that increases my costs.

My Hantek cost me £200. It works fine, I can't think how I managed wothout it. If it's your first 'scope it should serve you well. If your skill and expertise lead you on to needing something more professional then spend more money when you need to.

On the whole, Chinese quality is good - there are lots of people who still like to trash Chinese products in order to protect their complacent overpriced mediocrity.

Chinese electronics quality can be good but there is absolute crap produced there too, from stolen and badly copied IP, to plain old intentional fake products that have bitten many on this site.

On the whole, buyer beware and buy products with a lots of reviews and tear-downs to see what's inside the box.

Based on my experience I keep telling people to stay away of Owon. Got a failure somewhat common but the local service (unofficial, I later learnt) did not solve alleging that manufacturers could not "reproduce" it.

I've been mostly satisfied with my Siglent scopes. I would recommend looking for a 4-channel scope with as much bandwidth as you can afford.

What worries me is not that I'll buy a product that won't do the job, but if it develops a fault I'd like to think the osilloscope would be exchanged or repaired free of charge. I mentioned Tektronix, because I'm pretty sure they do honour their warrenty, which I think is 5 years. I'm a bit skeptical about Chinese made products in this regard. But, technically, these Chinese models seem up to sctratch. Not that I'm an expert. Not sure there is much more that can be said in this thread. I am serching Ebay.

If it lasts a year without problems or glitches it will likely last 10 years in a benign office or home environment. In the field, those cheap things usually don't last very long. Guys like Tek know their gear will be worked hard and travel hard.

My old Tek TDS 220 internals has lasted longer than the plastic knobs.

I suggest comparing the capabilities of the oscilloscope under consideration with the requirements of the application it is intended to be used for. An oscilloscope able to provide the needed accuracy and resolution for the application will be a better choice.
