It was chosen for it lower Vgs specification.

The FQP7P06 is not available for a while on Mouser.

I was looking on Ebay where 5 pieces cost 12 dollars when including shipping.

Would there be any alternatives for the 2N7002? I first assumed it would be easily swapped with a 2N7000, which I already had, but then I looked into it and the 2N7000 would drawn more current. The 2N7002 doesn't seem to be available in through-hole form.
