Problem With "Orphaned" Internet Explorer 11 Processes

Lately, I've been having a problem with "orphaned" Internet Explorer 11 processes (iexplorer.exe) still running even after I've completely closed the browser tabs.

If I click on all the open tabs, IE will close all open windows and it appears that IE has been completely closed. However, on the Resource Monitor, there are still several iexploer.exe processes running. I can get rid of these orphaned process by selecting them and clicking Stop Process on the dialog box. However, I would like to fix the problem that's causing the orphaned processes in the first place.

The problem has been rather intermittent over the past 3 years, but it now occurs about every other day of operation of my computer. It also prevents controlled shut down (from the Start box) of Windows 7 and I have to press the power button to shut down the computer and then restart.

What is the cause of this annoying problem and a workable solution?

About 20 years ago people started using other internet browsers. I suggest you join them.

I have been Netscape and Firefox user for that long. Currently using Firefox.
