Maybe I can make the entire back of my phone the antenna?

Except power consumption that would consume a lot of energy making the battery life shorter and just not the best for a smartphone

What exactly do you know about antennas? What is the relationship of the number and the letter "G" to the frequencies used for communication? You might be surprised to learn that the G is just short for "Generation". There is a relationship to the frequencies used, but not an obvious one.

ETA: What exactly would the properties of a "powerful" antenna be?

 

Fifth generation cellular antenna. Connect one to your plain phone and will make it powerful with no consumption of "a lot of energy" But you need to have a lot of energy to climb to it.

Your question suggests that you need much more background in the basics of RF circuits and wireless communications than you have to "design a phone". I would strongly suggest you spend time reading up on the basics or radio, communications protocols, and antenna design before beginning your project.
