I have a Sharpie fine and ultra fine black permanent markers. Work great, love the things. Their caps have pocket clip.

Now. When I run motor cables, the cable is black, I was given Sharpie silver metallic permanent marker to mark the length. Strangely, the cap of this marker does not have pocket clip. I like your conspiracy angle take on it.

 

Why the silver Sharpie lacks a pocket clip, while all other Sharpies have one, is something philosophers have been debating down through the ages. Winston Churchill said it best: "It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma."

It may be that at some distant time in the far-off future, mankind will finally answer that question, and be uplifted by the deeper meaning behind it; but until that happy day of enlightenment arrives, we will simply have to accept the raw fact that what is, is.

 

My speculation:
Sharpie has studied users and determined that they never actually use the clip.
The presence of the clip and it's iconic shape are like the Coke bottle. No way they're going to change it.
New products are not held to this, and it's cheaper to get rid of the clip. Bye bye clip.
