Actually, now that I look at the input, you are going to need to use another resistor to the positive supply to bias the gate. You have a single ended supply not a dual supply.

JFETs are self-biasing, just like vacuum tubes (valves). His JFET stage is probably OK.

I think you are right. That dawned on me after I looked at the datasheet for the JFET.

The input signal is also expected to be very small so that makes it even more likely that all is well with the JFET gate circuit.
