We have a really weird spider around here that you don't see hardly at all. It has a hard dark smooth exoskeleton with light spots on it and a little larger than a tick. None of the usual "hairs" that spiders typically have. Can't remember its name but it doesn't look like a spider at all.

Similar to this if you reverse the light and dark...

Spiny Orb-weaver.

I've got tons all about my yard. I walk into a web at least a couple of times a day.

These pictures are of Boston Harbor taken from Castle Island which is the location of Fort Independece, built in 1634.

In the 1800’s, Edgar Allen Poe was stationed there. The gunpowder storage catacombs were the inspiration for his story “The Casks Of Amantillad. Several if his stories were inspired by the Boston Harbor Islands.

Today, Castle Island and Fort Independence are popular recreational destinations, Between the fort and tours therein, boating and sailing traffic, a salt water fishing pier and airplane traffic from Boston's Logan International Airport (across the harbor) , thousands of people visit daily.

DJ, the first ARRL Field Day in Boston was held on Castle Island by the Boston Red Cross Amateur Radio Club. I organized it. I was also a founding member of the club. This was in the 80s. At the time, I lived in Southie on O Street, so it was close to home.

The Field Day was a success, and I even performed my first sea rescue... on foot... and got to use my modded radio to call mayday to the Coast Guard. Someday maybe I will tell the story.
