'cause the output is inverted. Starts high due to the pullup, goes low due to increased current through resistor. No tricks. ;)

Increasing base voltage causes increasing collector current. Increasing collector current causes decreasing collector voltage. Therefore, increasing base voltage causes decreasing collector voltage. Inversion!
