OK, SINCE it is still not working, a first step would be to check the voltages at the different points in that vertical diode string. In a direct coupled amplifier every voltage matters.
MY GUESS is that a leaking or shorted bypass capacitor is disrupting the bias everywhere.
By exchanging the portions of the circuit with the audio signal and the parts of the circuit that are normally signal-free they have provided a much larger target for leakage problems.
There are valid reasons for the similarities we see in many products as well aswhy we do not see many amplifiers like these.
