May 12th sounds good to me.

SO, everyone meet in Florida, near the SAGO data center, and we will cut the cake ;)

maxpower097, Im crashing on your couch.. as long as your neighbor doesn't try to cook hot wings and burn your house down..AGAIN! ;)

Hello,

Quite an impressing spec for the new server.
CentOS is a nice linux system.
It is based on the well respected Red Hat.
The "old" server is running linux too, isn't it?

The extra cores are nice. Database typically hogs two cores, leaving 1 for apache/php, and one for the rest. I've found great performance improvements switching to the 64 bit mysql/php/apache setup, it allows for not only more data moving, but a few extra instructions that *nix can use for better overall sweetness.

If the forum stays as busy as it has, and keeps growing, you shouldn't hit a ceiling anytime soon, as adding more RAM allows for better database caching and speed. I generally have around 6G-8G of tables cached in RAM, something impossible on a 32 bit OS.

So should I put the sporadic "Server Not Responding" up as "Tarballing or mysqldump in process"?
I would prefer that.

It scares me a little every time I see the "Server Not Responding"...(shiver)

I would rather see: "Retched, we are saving all of you great posts so future generations of young people can see that it is possible to accept your flaws, make mistakes and still have a sense of humor."

Wouldn't that be nice? ;)

Just assume that that is what your browser MEANS when it SAYS "Not Responding".

On the bright side, it will be super-dooper speedy once the transition is complete! No more random slow-downs, etc.

Where is the current server location?

???

I have 20+Mbps connections speeds to SAGO based servers, so that'll be nice.

For some reason, the wi-fi connection to my laptop is offering faster upload speeds than my hard-wired desktop.. Its hard wired into the wi-fi router, so the uplink should be the same.

I suppose it could be the cable I am using..

Go to www.speedtest.net to find out. Could be any number of things. Usually cards that are terminally slow on the network have a lot of the ethernet "firmware" as the software driver, instead of actual firmware, which makes things a bit... hinky...

Thats what I have been using.

One thing for windows users, your bandwidth is being choked by your OS.

MS Windows "reserves" of your available bandwidth for OS "reasons"

You may read about the QoS stuff, but that is only part of the story.

Windows (WGA) and update, keep a steady communication with the MS servers.

Use a network capture tool to see what is being sent.

So, even though this 20% is only reserver while data is being sent, and the resulting Time Till "dead", or the time the port is left open for more communications, ends up being almost 100% of the time.

I remember hearing about this years ago, and MS dismissed it with a KB (knowledge base) post, HOWEVER, during a call with my ISP, I asked why I was not getting the advertised speeds.

They asked which OS I was running. At the time, is was Vista. During other problems, I had installed MS Network Monitor 3.4. Sure enough.

A boot to a dos based test showed no such truncating or bottlenecking of my connection.

There are apparently ways to disable this, but if you are running windows, you do not want to. As this is the only way your PC finds out about windows attack patches and the such.

SO, it can lead to slower patching of your system and the such.

If you have a fast connection 10+Mbps, you can reduce the "sequestered" bandwidth to 1%, and still have plenty of communications with "Mission Control" ;)

Dave.....a man of few words.. ;)
2 posts, 4 words must be a record! Especially given I sign every post so thats 2 words before we start!

My excuse is that the said posts were made at 7.20 in the morning; I am very much a man of few words at 7.20 ;)
