On many Controllers the Outputs can not withstand excessive Current that may
be created by outside Interfacing-Circuits.
Too much Current can over-heat the entire Chip, or destroy the individual Output.
So attention needs to be paid to the Current Output Specifications of the Chip.
This is normally not a big problem, but the Circuit designer needs to be aware of it.

Although probably not ideal for a power supply there are gate drivers that have built in over current protection. I can't seem to find it now, but I did find one once that measured the difference across a shunt and would shut down at 80 mA I believe. I wish I would have downloaded or bookmarked it. Even had a built in boost converter to be able to use a NFET for high side switching.
