Tesla is often credited for inventing 3-phase AC power with an 1887 3-phase motor patent, but he envisioned it using 6 wires.
He didn't recognize at the time that you only needed 3 wires.
it was Mikhail Dolivo-Dobrovolsky who developed a three-phase electrical generator and a three-phase electric motor in 1888. His three-phase three-wire transmission system was displayed in 1891 in Germany, where he transmitted power form an AC generator to an AC motor over 110 miles with 75% efficiency.
