New to Circuits: Two Voltage Sources in Series

Just curious. What would happen if I had the following circuit?

It seems valid under KVL: -1V + 1V = 0.

Would the equivalent circuit just be a short? Would neither element be absorbing / supplying power?

Consider the implications of symmetry. If one element is supplying power, then the other element must be absorbing power. What basis is there for deciding which is supplying and which is absorbing?
