To connect something which has micro USB socket to something which has a USB plug.

Why have you just got it if you have no use for it?

Yep, the mini-USB wasn't fragile/intermittant enough. The micro-USB meets the fragility target. So now, you can convert a reliable USB to a less reliable connection.

There's also a variety of types to confuse onlookers.

There's a unique connector USB lead for my Nikon camera that's probably expensive if I have to replace it. Most of the discount shops have micro-USB leads, that don't fit my other camera or any MP3 players.
Mobile phones seem to be yet another connector style for what looks like a micro-USB.

It's a USB OTG (on the go) adapter used to allow some smart phones to host USB peripherals such as flash drives. I have one and have used it for same. I must remember to try plugging in a mouse, keyboard or both some time.
