Hi i have a problem that i'm trying to solve my nikon camera has no way to charge from usb. it says 9v 2.5a on the bottom i assume for an ac input, however the battery is 7.4 volts. could i use a nikon dummy battery (designed to be pluged in at home) and a 2s lipo battery rated at 7.4v (linked below). is there anything else i would need to do??? i dont want to fry my camera. edit* its for time lapse's so i can shoot for long periods of time without changing batterys

hi 1503,
Welcome to AAC.
It is important that you confirm that '9v 2.5a' is AC or DC, look for a symbol at the end of the 9v label.
You can buy ready made modules that will boost the USB 5Vdc to 9Vdc.

hi,
That is 9V DC, ref image symbol.
The charge current for that 2.5A battery, will be much less than 2.5A, possibly 0.25A. [C/10]
So a 5Vdc step upto 9Vdc PSU will draw approx 0.4Amp.

Do you have details of the battery charger.?

hi,
I must say I am always a little dubious regarding the specification claimed by some sellers.
I would first test it using a bench PSU set for 5V and a resistive test load, say 22R , 50 or 10Watt resistor for the 9V out.

Frequently Questions & Answers
Q:Why this step uo cable can't provice enough 9v to my device?

A:
1. Please make sure your device needs 9v to work instead of higher or lower.
2. Please make sure the power bank is enough 2A with full power and have 5v output.
3. Please don't ignore the max curren is 1A. It means your device should be under 1A.
4. Please test this cable with different device, in fact, it can always give you a big surprise.

Note:

1. Please make sure your power supply is 5v and device needs 9v.
2. Please check your device if over-power, if the temperature is more than 65 Celsius.
3. This step up cable Convert Rate: 85%-95%, it is normal that there is a slight lost of power during convertion.
4. Please note not all of the laptops, cameras or other devices can be compatible with this cable.

EDIT: this is incorrect

I find it hard to believe that the D5300 would draw 2.5A in normal use. Does it have a built in charger? 9V doesn't correspond to any LI battery configuration.

the battery is below, but eric said it would be 0.4amps because its dc?

FYI: There are some multi-voltage power banks on the market that have discrete voltages from 5 to 20 and include a set of universal barrel plugs. These tend to be larger and more expensive than the typical USB only units.

would you think that would be a safer option? do you have a link to any good ones, ps thanks all for the reply. this is a great site!

hi c,
If you plan to recharge the battery as per post #10, at say C/5 , you need a 0.25A charger suitable for a 7.2V Li_Ion battery.
I will look on the web, see if I can find a 5V to 7.5V Li-Ion charger.

EDIT:
Cannot find a ready built commercial unit
As a side note read thru this PDF link
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_from_a_usb_port

You may have to consider a charging voltage source other than the USB port.

These aren't safer but more efficient and integrated in a single package.

These products are shown at the manufacturer's sites. You would need to find a U.S. supplier such as Amazon, Newegg or B & H.

It should be noted that Nikon requires a proprietary adapter (EP-5A) to make any external power solution possible. The input end of this adapter is also proprietary but could be modified to a standard barrel jack.
