There's also another component that's hard to identify, is very difficult to see due to so much coating on it but against the light it shows 5M55 ??

Just as I suspected. The SMD code is not S638. It is S6.
The manufacturer logo is General Semiconductors, now part of Vishay.

looks like the sd103aw may be obsolete, would there be an equivalent replacement?
