from a lot of things.The economy is changing many things change.Where can you go
to meet people,school.You also have the winter moving in.

Since I'll be working at a college in Boston, I'm sure I'll be able to get out more and meet more people. Boston is a great place. Lots of history, places to go, people to meet. I think this job is really going to open things up for me, and I am definitely looking forward to it

Nah, I think that's the whole point of loosewireese. Only one person can ever speak it (or write it), which is what makes it so special. I'm sure loosewire would agree that the important thing is for you to be yourself. Don't bother trying to fit in. Speak your own language, and you'll benefit even more.

I am still blown. And to think I walk everyday to work.

4 times, so say around 30 minutes each day total.
I refuse to ride my bike and it is still grounded to this day,in the living room.

But sometimes I think my belly is smaller than before.

By the way I am still using the same stinkin modem. Seems service got better cause I always call and give what for at the customer service

 

I'm paying for 3 Mb/s DSL, and I'm only getting about 1 Mb/s. Magnet, I'm willing to bet I'm more in the middle of nowhere than you are! I'm buried deep in the foothills of the Green Mountains, nothing but trees as far as the eye can see (which isn't too far because there are so many trees ). I've got the worst ISP ever, but I guess it's better than the dial-up I used to have.

My new years resolution is probably to get off the computer for a while and get out more. I need to meet some more people and give my poor laptop a rest

Going to be an interesting year. I have nothing but high hopes for it!

I'm so in the middle of nowhere that even Google Earth and GPS can't find me!! If you type in my address, it shows a field about a mile away. I am equidistant from no-where. Our farm has a different address, phone exchange, & school district. Unless you understand orthocenter, it's hard for me to give directions from the three nearest towns (miniburgs < 500 each). We have a higher population of wild things like mountain lions & coyotes than people.
My New Year's Resolution--to get closer to retirement. I hope that the 2013-14 school year will be my last. Needless to say, there are a lot of i's that need to be dotted and t's crossed before I will be prepared to make that huge leap.

Thanks Loosewire. It's my very first attempt to be an independent contractor. Hopefully, I'll leave this job with a great reference. I'd like to be able to do this again, the degrees of freedom makes it worth it.

 

I can't picture in this environment of electronics,a picture of a independant

contractor. I can see the cable installer,I can see the box store home repair guys.

Orlando means Mickey Mouse and Univerial Studios or the fast food or travelers,

hotels. What did I miss. The past home of Our Famous Sarg, pictured with this

Orlando has a surprisingly large industrial base, including Lockeed Martin, who I've contracted with.

Well, looking back at my resolution from last year, I'd say I did pretty well. I certainly didn't get away from the laptop much, but I definitely got out more and met a lot of new people. My resolution this year would have to be about the same. Maybe to meet a nice lady I can spend time with, too. Hmm, that'd be nice....

Yup, sounds about right. I once typed my address into google maps and it came up with nothing but thick trees and wide open fields. My house is nowhere to be seen. Streetview only works on one road in my town, and that one's about 2 miles from my house. Google Earth is even worse at finding my house. I tried that and ended up on completely flat ground. Nothing--not even trees--were there. It was pretty sad, really. Then again, I love it, and when I retire I plan to spend the rest of my time right up here in the boonies!

So the big guys are cutting out benefits and going to contractors. They have been

attacked for going to right to work states. The labor relations board can tell the big

guys what to do. Maybe a new chance for contractors to do good in big industry.

There are many reasons to use contractors. Cutting out benifits is only part of the story. Firms can use contractors to fill critical needs, as temporary help for projects that have an end date, to fill other temporary needs, to get specialist expertise, and other reasons. Product cycles are shrinking, and many firms are cutting permanent staff and opting to staff projects with temporary workers. In the modern "agile" economy, the need for contractors will only grow.

 

With out getting too much into what you are doing. Some helpful advice to members

could be,is this a 1090 thing or as a sub for sub at home or office.

 

It's a 1040 thing because I went through an agency. I hope in the future I can contract from home. I don't really like living out of state.

For engineering, way too much Intellectual Property and a non-disclosure web from hell to work through, some needing a security clearance. The idea of contractors hopping between companies would certainly not sit well with the established engineering staff at all.

Those aren't the sort of jobs somebody can pop in, work, and pop out of. It takes a few months to absorb the industrial knowledge of that specialty before it can even be applied to a benefit.

I can see items such as some PC repair, final assembly, teaching (niche), and a very few other areas where contractors could be used regularly.

As a similar example, related to computers rather than electronics. Citibank and Wells Fargo both have about a dozen contracted full time Field Engineers onsite with their own building space to repair all of their internal systems. They are paid by Dell, not by the bank, even though they go to work at the bank and have an office there. A friend of mine has worked in one or the other for about a decade now. Factories have similar onsite specialists for PLC/equipment to repair any breakdowns, some of which are contracted.

 

I'm sure that in the tax code somewhere,the banks lawyers have that one figured

out.
