I am having difficulty in connecting a dc motor of 2400rpm to an 5 A step-down transformer which converts 230 ac V to 12 V. Can we connect it directly to the motor or we have to put a rectifier in between the transformer and the motor??

What is the voltage of the motor?
How much current does the motor draw?
Sarge is right about the rectifier circuit, but if the voltage and current is different from what the transformer can provide you may have other problems.

Stepping down the voltage is fine but you will need a bridge rectifier (probably 3 phase rectifier) to convert your 12 Vac to DC voltage then regulate that voltage to what ever required by the motor.

Thank you.
