Only issue with that part is if being used as a PWM switch. It has a high valued
gate R and that would cause part to dissipate a lot more power due to slow switching.

But for static loads, like a relay, bulb.....its fine for a few hundred mA.

If the input is not connects from a BJT or MOSFET or any IC and it is connected from a switch like below then the pull down resistor will be needed.

Agree with Scotts post. My reference to high valued gate R is
the series R connected between input and gate, not the one
connected to ground.
