Hello,

I am trying to switch 500vdc supply, I am using (Transistor,MOSFET,N Channel,SPP02N60S5) supplied buy RS.

Problem - the 500v supply is on wether or not the gate has a supply.

Attached is a sketchy schematic.

The power supplies must have the same common, see attached:

 

Besides connecting the grounds together (as previously mentioned) you really should
have a zener diode across the gate and source of the MOSFET (probably a cap too)
to suppress switching transients.
